Just Be Yourself

What does being yourself mean?

Being yourself means portraying your real character. But how to know what your real character is? You are defined by your own emotions and experiences which affects you in the given moment. A doctor never said that you are going to be shy or outgoing. You don’t have one personality. You are defined by experiences and emotions. So, is it okay to be yourself in every situation? Yes and No. Suppose you went to a job interview, there you have to act professionally because it is a job interview, however, for some personal scenarios like first day at college or meeting someone outside the professional area it is beneficial there to be yourself. In order for you to be yourself, you need to identify your intentions, Do you want work? Do you want relationship? Or Do you want friendship?

Just embrace the feeling you are experiencing in the moment, you might be feeling shy, you might be feeling outgoing so just act the way you feel. Many times people try to be people who they are not, the reason might be that person is prettier, funnier; more respected or might be popular.

It's tough to enjoy life when you don't like yourself. People who haven't learned to accept and get along with themselves tend to have more difficulty accepting and getting along with other. Your difficulty with other people is actually your difficulty with yourself

The Bible says a good tree will bear good fruit, and a rotten tree will bear rotten fruit. Likewise, the "fruit" of our lives comes from the "root" within us. If you're rooted in shame, guilt, inferiority, rejection, lack of love and acceptance, etc., the fruit of your relationships will suffer. However, once you have a revelation of God's unconditional love for you and begin to accept yourself and others, eventually these new roots will produce good fruit, and your relationships will thrive.

Never say or think negative things about yourself, such as, "I never do anything right." "I'll never change." "I'm ugly." "I look terrible." "I'm dumb." "Who could ever love me?" By your words you will be justified..., and by your words you will be condemned”. In other words, the way we talk and think about ourselves reveals how we feel about ourselves.

Never compare yourself with other people. God must love variety or He wouldn't have created us all differently—even down to our fingerprints. You'll never succeed at being yourself if you're trying to be like someone else. Other people can be a good example to you, but duplicating even their good traits will manifest differently through your individual personality.

“Don’t pretend to be someone you are not, because they don’t have what you got.”
